A Nordic Hack Tour for the ages

Finnish startup superheroes are bringing their knowledge treasure trove to the Baltics and what a Hack Tour this will be!

Our friends Slush, Startup Sauna and Junction are joining forces to offer the local community their coaching, coding and networking expertise. Emerging tech talent, tech enthusiasts, and startups are invited to gather at the Mill on September 9 for an entire day of hacking, learning, and networking.

The tour programme will consist of three parts: Startup Sauna will host a pitching/coaching event for startups, Junction will be holding a workshop for developers and Slush will be powering the networking. Register here until September 2.

The Nordics are coming to the Baltics with some of their absolute best startup scene representatives – arguably the world’s leading startup event  Slush is partnering up with Finland’s top accelerator Startup Sauna, one of the top choices among Latvian start-ups for taking their ideas forward.

CEO of Finch.io Jānis Veģis and his team took part in Startup Sauna’s last year’s batch and had the opportunity to showcase their idea at last year’s Slush. “It’s called Startup Sauna not only because it gets really hot and tense, but also because you and, more importantly, your business have to get butt naked,” says Jānis, adding that “it may feel weird and uncomfortable at first, but then you realise that you’re not alone – dozens of smart Finns are sitting next to you and they are willing to help you as much as they can.” Other Latvian Startup Sauna alums include Infogr.am, Edurio, Dripit.io, Vividly and Hackmotion.

If you’ve been to TechChill before, you might have already met some of Sauna’s mentors (and our friends) – Juha Ruohonen, Aape Pohjavirta and Tuomas Kosonen who have already dipped their toes into the Baltic tech ecosystem and will coach the Hack Tour attendees alongside renowned local mentors Infogram’s Alise Semjonova and TRIGNY’s Viesturs Sosārs, with more names to come. Best performing start-ups could receive Slush tickets and get shortlisted to Startup Sauna’s 7-week zero-equity accelerator, starting on October 16 and ending on the Slush stage on November 30.  See full mentor list and programme here.

Meanwhile, Europe’s largest hackathon Junction will host a workshop for developers. With an annual gathering of over 1300 global hackers, the student-founded hackathon offers participants ALL the latest hardware and APIs – from drones to thermal cameras and voice-controlled gadgets to VR Headsets and IOT sensors. Plus, we hear that Junction tickets might also be changing hands?

Now, we’re not naively fanboying over our Northern neighbours with the funny accents (they’re aware of this) – having worked in close partnership with our Finnish friends for several years now (the famous actual sauna at TechChill’s after-party is just the more visible aspect of the friendship) we can honestly say that their relative global fame is well deserved.

As a local partner, TechChill will have some surprises of their own. Marija Ručevska, TechChill CEO stresses that the Baltic-Nordic tech partnership is excellent ground for more entrepreneurial success stories, adding that:

“Learning from one another and exchanging ideas is what propels success and helps us strengthen our tech community.”

The Hack Tour is just one of a series of cooperation events between the Baltics and Nordics. Later this year, TechChill will be heading to Slush on November 30th as part of a Latvian delegation consisting of the Ministry of Economics, the Latvian Startup Association and LIAA.
